Ophthalmology - Laser Vision Correction |
Life
today seems to move at the speed of light, but in the field of
laser vision correction it truly does.
For Dr. Charles Flowers, customized vision correction is the hallmark
of his practice, combining new technology with existing procedures
to provide patients with optimal results. Having trained
at Cornell and USC, Dr. Flowers specializes in refractive and
corneal surgery. “We look at the visual needs of our
patients,” he says, “and we craft a treatment that
will best fulfill those needs.”
One of the most exotic of the emerging technologies is the wavefront-guided
laser. Originally designed for astronomers studying distant
stars, the system captures a “fingerprint” of the
patient’s visual system and calculates the necessary correction.
As exciting as this new procedure sounds, Dr. Flowers recognizes
that not all patients benefit from the latest techniques.
He studies data from research to determine which of his patients
are candidates for innovative treatments. “We use
a conservative approach,” he says. “We only
deploy techniques that have been clearly shown to provide the
best results.”
His philosophy leads him to the new paradigm in medicine –
one of using evidence, not medical tradition, for the treatment
of his patients. “A doctor needs to look at the studies,”
he says, “and read and analyze the literature.”
If an established procedure will give the desired results, Dr.
Flowers will suggest it.
“We’re very focused on individualizing the care for
our patients,” he says. “I want to match our
treatments to the individual goals and desires of our patients.”
